With support from 1-800-Flowers.com, Pencils of Promise aims to provide training for 500 teachers around the world

NEW YORK, May 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the non-profit organization Pencils of Promise ("PoP") which works to increase access to quality education around the globe, announces the launch of their No. 1 Teacher Campaign. The campaign aims to fund training for 500 teachers in the communities in which PoP works in honor of the teachers in all of our lives.

Currently 250 million primary school aged children lack basic reading, writing, and math skills. PoP's teacher training program was established in 2012 and has trained over 200 teachers to-date.  The cost to train a teacher and provide engaging learning materials costs only $500, but the return for both students and teachers alike is priceless. Students learning in classrooms with a PoP trained teacher have tested three times higher than their peers, signifying that PoP's methodology is bringing real results to the classroom.  Building on these successful outcomes, PoP is expanding its teacher training program to reach even more communities and aims to train 1,000 teachers by the end of 2015.

1-800-Flowers.com has joined PoP's efforts to honor and empower teachers around the world by contributing a portion of proceeds from the sales from the POP Collection at 1-800-Flowers.com during the campaign. 1-800-Flowers.com will also donate bouquets of flowers every week throughout the campaign that will be sent to individuals who have made a donation to the effort and to the teacher of their choice.

Started by founder Adam Braun in 2008, Pencils of Promise has broken ground on more than 200 schools and made education possible for more than twenty thousand children around the globe.

"My 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Cook, chose a new book from the library for each of her students every week. She taught me that reading was a doorway to pursue my unique passions," said Pencils of Promise COO, Melanie Stevenson. "Ms. Cook, if you're reading this, you're my No. 1 Teacher and I'm making a donation to the campaign in your honor so that another child may have a quality teacher like you."

Neil Blumenthal, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Warby Parker, Jeff Raider, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Harrys, Matt Brimer, Co-Founder of General Assembly, Actress Katie Chang, and YouTube celebrity AJ Rafael, have all signed on to support this important campaign in honor of the teachers that shaped them. "The best teachers are guides and help you discover what you are most passionate about, they give you the foundation to be a happy human being," said Blumenthal.
