Vance Elementary School evacuated due to gas leak

Posted: Updated:
VANCE, Ala. -- Vance Elementary School was forced to evacuate Wednesday morning after a report of a gas leak in the cafeteria.

Students, teachers and faculty were taken to the school gym around 10 a.m. after a leak was detected. Officials have since decided to dismiss students for the day while Alagasco crews continue work to repair the gas leak. It is unknown at this time when the work is expected to be finished.

According to the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education, students who don't have a ride home will be taken to Brookwood High School until transportation arrangements can be made.

The following is a statement from the school board:

"There is a gas leak at Vance Elementary School in the cafeteria area.  All students are safe and have been moved to the gym located on the other side of the school campus.  Alabama Gas is on the scene.  Due to the fact that the leak has not been located, Vance Elementary School is dismissing children to their parents and students who are not picked up by their parents will be moved to Brookwood High School as stated in our School Crisis Plan.  The school has notified the parents via the student notification system.

"Until the leak is found it is advised that no media crews go to Vance Elementary.  Thank you for your consideration in this matter.  Please contact the Superintendent’s Office if you have any questions."
