Swimmer dies after being pulled from water off Isle of Palms

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) -- A distressed swimmer died Wednesday afternoon after being pulled from the waters off the coast of the Isle of Palms. 

According to Isle of Palms fire officials, they were first called to a swimmer in distress near 21st Avenue. Bystanders pulled the 22-year-old man out of the water and began CPR. The fire department arrived moments later to take the man to East Cooper Medical Center. He was in critical condition at that time, emergency officials said. 

The swimmer died at the hospital, officials said.

The coroner identified the swimmer as 22-year-old Jermaine Choice of North Charleston.
