Daniel Island withdraws annexation efforts

Posted: Updated:

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Daniel Island Neighborhood Association voted Tuesday night to stop the annexation petition. The vote was unanimous.

The movement started last summer when some Daniel Island residents said they were upset about the lack of progress on proposed schools. Petitioners were looking to leave Berkeley County and join Charleston County.

DINA President Dave Williams said Wednesday the decision came after after Berkeley County has shown an interest in providing updates and answering questions of concerned residents.

"They have committed to keeping our neighborhood school K-8 which was a big victory for our campaign, and their plans for the new high school look very attractive," Williams said.

Williams said the island would have saved tax money by switching to Charleston County, so he was hopeful that Berkeley County officials continue to spend time an energy on Daniel Island. He went on to say that Berkeley County had a great opportunity to build support on the island over the next several years with the schools project and the improvement of the Cainhoy/Clements Ferry Road project.

"This section of Berkeley County could become a hotspot for growth and revenue, and they will need to pay close attention to both residential and business needs as the urban centers of Charleston County will always be our nearest neighbors," he said.
