Summerville woman to undergo mental evaluation before bond set in dismemberment case

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Summerville woman accused of dismembering her husband's body with a fold-up saw will undergo a mental health evaluation.

Nancy Bentley was arrested in January after police say her common-law husband Roy Steward's body was found cut up and put into three trash bags in the back of her car.

State officials still have not said how Steward died.

Court records show that 54-year-old Bentley's mental health evaluation was ordered in April. When the results are returned, the judge will then reconsider setting bond for her.

Bentley has been in jail since her arrest, charged with obstruction of justice and desecration of human remains.

Authorities say she claimed to be bipolar and on medication for mental health disorders when she was arrested.
