Mount Pleasant boy, 8, with brain tumor dies

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- An 8-year-old boy battling an aggressive brain-stem tumor has died. In July, Ethen Richardson was given less than a year to live.

The Lowcountry community rallied in support of Ethen.

His family, on a Facebook page, said Wednesday night that "Ethen is completely healed and there is no more sickness. God called his little angel back home today."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation sent the Richardsons to New York City for a week around the New Year. Also in January, the South Carolina Aquarium and the Coast Guard gave him a day to remember. He got a behind the scenes look at the aquarium and then got to skipper a Coast Guard vessel.

Ethen ran a lemonade stand in Park West ever since his diagnosis to help his family pay for his medical bills.

A Facebook page has been set up with details about a planned candlelight vigil in honor of Ethen. The vigil is set for Wednesday, May 14. The vigil will run from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Memorial Waterfront Park in Mount Pleasant.

On Saturday, there is also a celebration of Ethen's life at Awendaw Green. The event starts at 4 p.m. and will go until the last person leaves, according to the Facebook page.

"Bring your lawn chairs and coolers full of your favorite beverage and join us for live music, entertainment, bouncy houses, face painting, food, cotton candy, and bacon," a new message on the page reads.

The event is designed to give people who knew Ethen a chance to tell stories about him and how he touched the lives of so many people across the Lowcountry. At 4 p.m., they will release red Chinese lanterns in his honor.

"In the words of Ethen – 'This is going to be amazing!'"
