Cops run 'Coast to Capital' for Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:
SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Police officers will be hitting the sand on Sullivan's Island Thursday morning, but it's less about having fun in the sun and more about helping Special Olympians in the Palmetto State.

Starting at 11 a.m. Thursday, officers will change out their police uniforms for running gear when they start a 127-mile relay.

Law enforcement officers from across the state are involved in the torch run Thursday for the Special Olympics and officers from the Lowcountry are no exception.

The relay takes place from the 'Coast to the Capital' and takes off from 22 1/2 Street on Sullivan's Island to the steps of the Statehouse in Columbia. The event coincides with similar relays taking place in various parts of the state at the same time.

Officers run around the clock, taking shifts, until arriving at those the steps of the Capital Friday morning.

"It's a very moving experience a very emotional experience for those officers that are participating because they run into family, friends, and athletes waiting for that flame to come in to light the cauldron for the start of the summer games," said Major Stan Gragg of the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Profits from the fundraising relay are all for the 22,000 Special Olympics athletes in South Carolina.

"It's all about inclusion and engagement with people with intellectual disabilities in our communities and it's about giving opportunities to these athletes that they might not otherwise have," Gragg said.

Friday night, all law enforcement relay teams across the state will join together and take part in a 7.5-mile run from the Capital to Fort Jackson where the torch will be carried into the Special Olympics Summer Games.
