All VA clinics to undergo face-to-face audit

Posted: Updated:
The head of the Veterans Affairs is fighting back over calls for his resignation because of deadly delays at one Veterans Hospital. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki faces a far reaching subpoena from the House Veterans Affairs Committee. His answer to that is to call for a face-to-face audit all all Department of Veterans Affairs Clinics.

Republican Representative Jeff Million is chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. He said, "it's unfortunate we have to come to this decision, but we did not do this without some substantial justification." Miller claims that since April 28, his committee has called daily to the VA's Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs, trying to get more information on what has been dubbed a secret waiting list of patients. Those patients were veterans at the VA hospital in Phoenix, Arizona who were trying to get medical care. Instead, as many as 1600 vets were made to wait for months. At least 40 on the list died waiting for care.

Skinseki refuses to resign, saying he is working to get to the bottom of the problem, which will include the face-to-face audits.
The so-called patient list first came to light when a retired VA physician became a whistle blower.

House Speaker John Boehner wants to give Shinseki, a retired Army General, a chance. Boehner says this is not the only problem with the VA. He calls the problems "systemic." Boehner said, "I don't believe that just changing someone at the top is going to actually get to the solutions that many of us are looking for."
