Feeding Children Everywhere aims to feed kids during summer months

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Palmetto Hunger Project is working to feed children in need across the Lowcountry. For many kids, school is the only place they get a healthy meal everyday.

So when the school year comes to a close, some people are trying to make a difference. They will gather together Saturday, May 17 to package meals at the Mount Pleasant Rec Department on Egypt Road.

Those meals will then go to the Lowcountry Food Bank. It's all part of a global campaign called Feeding Children Everywhere.

"If you look at the numbers, it's staggering. I don't want to bore you with statistics, but we do know that over half of the children in the Lowcountry are on free and reduced lunches, and 80 percent of those won't be eating well over the summer at all. We know that, so we're trying to make a difference right here," said Kathy Nash with the Palmetto Hunger Project.

Organizers say right now they have plenty of volunteers, but what they really need are donations. Financial donations will stay in the Lowcountry, they said.
