Sen. Tim Scott urges CofC graduates to never quit

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Underneath the canopy of oak trees that dot the lawn of the Cistern, Sen. Tim Scott on Saturday told the 2014 class of graduates at the College of Charleston three important life lessons that he'd learned.

First, he said, failure is not going to be the end result for those who do not quit. Success, he said, was inevitable.

Scott told the crowd that growing up poor in a single parent household in North Charleston was not easy. He admitted that he was not a good student in high school and failed several classes. However, he said that his life turned around when he met a Chik-fil-A franchise owner who told him to use his intelligence to find success.

Scott urged the graduating class to use their skills and knowledge to become mentors, too.

"If you want to stand out in life, you must stand up for somebody who is not able to stand for themselves," he said.

And finally, he told them that the path of walking on water starts with getting out of the boat.

Scott was sworn into office in 2013 to replace the seat left vacant by Jim DeMint. Before moving into the Senate, Scott was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Also during the commencement ceremonies, honorary degrees were granted to Philanthropist Marlene Addlestone and College of Charleston Board of Trustee Emerita Marie Land.

This was also the last commencement as president for Dr. George Benson, who is stepping down from his position to join the business school faculty.

More than 1,800 students received their degrees on Saturday in a pair of ceremonies on the Cistern. Scott was the featured speaker.
