NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Three students earned a total of $7,500 in scholarships from the South Carolina Federal Credit Union.

Two of the students will stay in the state for their college educations.

West Ashley High School's Ariel Jackson earned a $4,000 scholarship and plans to attend the University if Chicago.

Justin Hearp, a College of Charleston student, earned a $2,500 scholarship and will continue his studies in accounting.

And Ashley Ridge High School's Caryn Ramelb earned a $1,000 scholarship and will attend the University of South Carolina.

“Being a locally based credit union, there is no greater investment than in the future of our community,” said Scott Woods, President & CEO, South Carolina Federal. “Seeing the applications year after year for these awards is a testament to the bright and talented youth that will soon be our leaders. As South Carolina Federal, we’re honored to help them along the way.”

More than 150 students applied for the scholarships by providing a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a written essay on how they have demonstrated the credit union's philosophy of people helping people.

The top three students were selected via panels of both internal and external judges.
