Moms spend day painting, enjoying aquarium in special events

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Moms were invited Sunday to take a free look at the South Carolina Aquarium and take in some painting lessons at Art in the Park.

The event gave moms and their families a chance to take in everything at the aquarium from the lemurs at the Madagascar Journey exhibit to the albino alligator and the renovated Saltmarsh Aviary.

"This is something we do every year to try and get mothers, kids, and the whole family down to enjoy all the great animals and exhibits we have inside," said Whit McMillian, the director of education at the aquarium. "By allowing kids to connect with not only their mom at the same time but also for that mom to show that they enjoy this kin of stuff too, it makes for a very special experience."

Mothers were recognized during daily programs, including the popular interactive dive shows.

In West Ashley, artistic moms were able to use Mother Nature as their backdrop at Old Towne Creek County Park. Armed with paintbrushes and easels, moms were able to sip wine and create masterpieces on canvas.

"We thought doing one on Mother's Day would be a great alternative to some of the more traditional things, give folks the opportunity to see this beautiful property when otherwise they would be doing some other things. This is a good alternative," said Eric Stewart, the parks manager.

The Old Towne Creek County Park is not open to the public yet, but organizers are planning to have it open soon.
