AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home on Martin George Lane Monday afternoon for reports of shots fired.

Deputies were told the suspect, 80-year-old Author Simmons, had fired shots into the air during an argument.

Simmons' son told deputies he was arguing with his father about money when the elderly man pointed a gun at his chest and pulled the trigger.

According to deputies, the gun did not go off but Simmons fired into the air again as his son walked away.

CCSO officials said Simmons smelled of alcohol when they found him near his home, a shed behind the son's mobile home.

Simmons told deputies that he and his son were arguing about money and that he "didn't like getting teased."

The gun, which Simmons reportedly hid behind the shed, was confiscated and he was charged with attempted murder.
