Isle of Palms Marina: The hidden gem

Posted: Updated:

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) --- When most people think of the Isle of Palms, they envision seven miles of sandy ocean. But on the other end of the island, the Isle of Palms Marina sits tucked away like a hidden gem.

“The city acquired the marina a little over 10, well 14 years ago roughly,” said Dick Cronin, the mayor of Isle of Palms.

The city owns the land but leases out the space to local businesses and vendors.

“We've probably spent a million-and-a-half to two million dollars,” said Cronin. “We've done a lot of work here. We had to put a bulk head in, control all of the access, improve the ramping capabilities."

It was money well spent. Cronin says the marina hosts thousands of school field trips and is like a second home to IOP locals.

“There's great fishing on this side,” said Tyler Tracy, the manager of Isle of Palms Marina. “[In] this waterway you can see all the islands and you can see Mount Pleasant, the bridge, from all different angles.

The Marina offers boat tours, harbor cruises, water sports and two restaurants.

“You can bring your dogs; you can bring you kids. Come play corn hole, have a beer, watch the sunset,” said Kristy Kinney, the director of events and promotions for Morgan Creek Grill. “We do have almost kind of three restaurants in one. We have the upper deck, the main dining room and the Creekside bar.”

Isle of Palms is the next stop for ABC News 4’s “Your Neighbors” series. Tune in Thursday night at 6 and 7 p.m. to ABC News 4 for our live 'Your Neighbors' broadcast from Coconut Joe's.
