Land survey crew triggers school lockdown in Berkeley County

Posted: Updated:

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Berkeley County elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a teacher thought she saw three men with guns near the school's campus.

Berkeley County School District officials said that HE Bonner Elementary is on an administrative lockdown. District spokeswoman Susan Haire said the lockdown was advised by law enforcement because of an incident near the school.

However, that recommendation was soon rescinded when the school's resource officer went to investigate and found a three-man crew surveying the land near the school, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

The lockdown began around 11 a.m.

District officials said they are in the process of notifying parents. Parents will also be notified when the lockdown has been lifted.

An administrative lockdown means all the external doors to the school are locked, but everything inside the building continues as normal.
