Bravo issues recall for raw pet food sold in Lowcountry

Posted: Updated:

CLARIFICATION: Despite information from Bravo, none of the listed local retailers carry Bravo brand dog food, but have in the past special ordered the food for some customers.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Bravo is voluntarily recalling certain lots of their pet foods due to a risk of Listeria monocytogene contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration announced the recall this week. A search on the Bravo website shows local retailers to be Hairy Winston in Mt. Pleasant,  Dolittle's of Charleston and the All is Well locations in Charleston. However, employees at all of the stores say they do not carry the food. All the listed locations say they have special ordered the brand for customers in the past, but due to the recall have stopped and are pointing customers to other brands.

According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The FDA says healthy cats and dogs rarely get sick from Listeria but those that do will have similar symptoms listed above for humans. If you think your dog or cat may be sick from the organism, you need to call your veterinarian.

The FDA reported that an independent lab found the bacteria in a sample during a recent review.

The Bravo company has received a limited number of reports of dogs experiencing nausea and diarrhea that may be associated with these specific products. The company has received no reports of human illness.

The recalled product was distributed nationwide to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers and directly to consumers. It can be identified by the batch ID code (best used by date) printed on the side of the plastic tube or on a label on the box.

Bravo discontinued all manufacturing in New Zealand on October 10, 2013 and officials said they will immediately start working with distributors and retailers to properly dispose of any affected product left on freezer shelves. The company will also be announcing the recall to pet owners to ensure they dispose of any affected product that has been purchased.

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners who have the affected product at home should dispose of this product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle). They can return to the store where purchased and submit the Product Recall Claim Form available on the Bravo website www.bravopetfoods.com for a full refund or store credit.
