Medical marijuana bills making moves in SC Statehouse

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's been a busy week in Columbia, where lawmakers are hurrying to push through several bills before the legislative session ends in early June. Two of those bills state lawmakers are working on have to do with medical marijuana.

Parents of children with epilepsy we featured in a special report this month are hoping and praying those bills get passed.

The medical marijuana bill that originated in the House and was approved has now been cleared in the Senate Medical Affairs Committee. The bill would let patients battling severe epilepsy be treated with a substance called cannabidiol or CBD oil. The oil is extracted from marijuana but with very little THC, the chemical that produces a high.

The medical marijuana bill that started in the Senate received House approval this week.

Both bills would allow any doctor in the state taking part in the CBD clinical trials to give the drug to patients suffering from any form of epilepsy that doesn't respond well to typical treatments.

This is giving a little hope to Lowcountry parents, like Jill Swing, who has been patiently waiting for relief for her daughter who has epilepsy.

"Mary Louise's seizures aren't life threatening but she has hundreds of seizures every single day," Jill Swing said. "So every day she doesn't have this medicine is a day wasted in my mind. It is real important for her to get it."

CBD oil has been shown to stop or reduce seizures in kids who suffer from epilepsy but it is currently illegal in South Carolina.

"I see the success in what's going on in Colorado and I also see the dire situation of families left behind that don't have access and how necessary and how greatly needed this is for us," Swing said.

Both medical marijuana bills are expected to be on the Senate floor starting next week.
