SC unemployment drops to lowest level in 13 years

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's unemployment rate dropped again in April, down to 5.3 percent. It's the lowest level in 13 years. The national unemployment rate during April was 6.3 percent.

The state's unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in March.

The State Department of Employment and Workforce reported on Friday that there were about 114,000 people unemployed in the state during April. That's down more than 4,600 from the previous month.

The number of people working in the state in April reached an all-time high with about 2,050,000 employed. It was the ninth straight month that employment had increased in South Carolina.

The increase in employment was led by gains in manufacturing, transportation and utilities, government and tourism.
