COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - After a string of embarrassing episodes in the most recent U.S. Senate elections, leaders of South Carolina's Democratic Party aren't taking any chances in 2014.

State Democratic Party Chairman Jamie Harrison is picking sides in next month's primary, prominently backing state Sen. Brad Hutto over unknown businessman Jay Stamper in the race for the seat currently held by Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Harrison says he can't support Stamper because he has a felony conviction in Nevada for selling unregistered securities. Stamper has also accused Democratic Party leaders of not supporting the party's ideals.

Stamper says Harrison encourages Democrats to act like Republicans to get elected.

Democrats selected Alvin Greene as the party's last U.S. Senate nominee in 2010.
