Man leaps from balcony to escape apartment fire

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man had to jump from his second-floor balcony early Sunday morning to escape a fire in his apartment.

According to the Charleston Fire Department, a man living at the Colonial Village Apartments at Hampton Pointe woke to find a fire in his apartment and tried to put it out.

After failing to control the fire, he ran to his balcony and jumped to the ground below. He suffered minor burns, fire officials said, and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Firefighters contained the fire to two units and part of the roof, but several other apartments suffered some smoke and water damage.

Red Cross officials said they were assisting a total of six families, including 10 adults, providing money for food and clothing, temporary shelter and personal hygiene items.

Residents from some of the units were able to move back into their homes Sunday evening, officials said.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
