Summerville geography whiz advances to finals

WASHINGTON (WCIV) -- A Summerville teen with a passion for geography has advanced to the 2014 National Geographic Bee championship round.

Krish Patel, a student at Pinewood Prep, is in a pretty comfortable place in Washington. This is his fourth trip to the finals in the geography bee.

The school was notified Monday that Patel had once again advanced to the championship round after winning in the round of 54 state-level winners.

The championship round will be televised live Wednesday on Nat Geo and rebroadcast Thursday evening.

If Patel wins, he will earn a $50,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

The second and third place winners will earn $25,000 and $10,000 scholarships respectively.

Joining Patel in the hampiochampionship are Tuvya Bergson-Michelson, of California; Pranit Nanda, of Colorado; Ameya Mujumbar, of Florida; Ansel Ahabue, of Georgia; Nick Rommel, of Massachusetts; Kyle Yu, of Ohio; Max Levine, of Rhode Island; Akhil Rekulapelli, of Virginia; and Asha Jain, of Wisconsin.
