Patriots Point set to commemorate D-Day anniversary aboard Laffey

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The 70th anniversary of D-Day will be marked with special programming aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown at Patriots Point.

The museum announced last month that a veteran of the Laffey and a U.S. Army Ranger who served during the invasion of Normandy will be on hand to talk about their experiences during the historic battle.

The Laffey is one of only two Naval warships left in existence that were involved in D-Day.

There will also be special music and video events on the U.S.S. Yorktown. The Yorktown symposium will be located in the Smokey Stover Theater at 7 p.m. June 6. An opportunity to meet and talk to Laffey veterans will start at 5:30 p.m.

Leading up to the anniversary, Patriots Point is seeking out any veterans involved in D-Day or the days around it.

"Pilots, sailors, or even French citizens living in Normandy are all invited to contact us and participate in this event, or are welcome to simply attend as honored guests," a release from the museum states.

Anyone who was involved in D-Day is asked to contact Alaina Cordes at or (843) 881-5976.

Admission is free. For more information, visit
