SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Fort Moultrie is joining this spring's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the bloody Civil War Overland Campaign of 1864.

The campaign was fought between Union troops commanded by Ulysses S. Grant and Confederates under Robert E. Lee in Virginia from May to June of 1864. Almost 100,000 troops were casualties or captured in the battles leading up to the siege of Petersburg, Virginia.

On Saturday evening, Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island commemorates the 39 South Carolina units that fought in such battles such as the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.

While the national commemoration is centered at three Virginia three national parks, commemorations of the campaign are being held at 11 sites from Maine to Michigan to Mississippi.
