New restaurants move into Charleston International Airport

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Starting Saturday, a New York-based company will take over food services at Charleston's airport, bringing with it new food options.

Delaware North Companies will open several new restaurants alongside the existing Dunkin Donuts and Sam Adams Bar. Company officials said they were excited to move into Charleston when the airport was being remodeled.

“As a family-owned company that is nearly 100 years young, Charleston seemed a perfect match with its rich history, award-winning dining and world-renowned southern hospitality,” said Kevin Kelly, president of Delaware North travel hospitality services. “We already feel a part of your great city and are excited to share with travelers some of Charleston’s best local brands.”

Over the next several months, Delaware North will set up temporary food service centers while it develops a complete picture of food options to be completed with the airport renovations.

“Our goal during this time is to put together a winning combination of both local and national brands that will bring delicious variety to the airport," Kelly said.

Here’s a look at what’s coming now:

Central Hall

Bogchi Grill and Triple B’s: Bar B Que - Bourbon - Burgers will open in the Central Hall, replacing the Lowcountry Grill and Magnolia Restaurant.

Bogchi Grill will offer quick service food such as hot sandwiches, soups and breakfast, while Bar B Que - Bourbon - Burgers will provide sit-down meal service from breakfast to dinner. The bar at the Triple B restaurant will offer 16 kinds of bourbon, including several made locally, to complement a full bar selection of beer, wine and liquor.

The Central Hall overlooks the airfield and will change significantly. In addition to fresh paint and murals, there will also be a new seating plan to make sure “everybody has a window table" in the restaurant, said Walt Pechulis Jr., Delaware North’s travel hospitality services director.

Concourse A

Caffe Siena will replace American Bagel but will offer similar fresh, made-to-order fare from breakfast items and hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soup, coffee and smoothies. The Samuel Adams Bar on Concourse A will remain open, but with a cosmetic refresh.

Concourse B

Delaware North is adding five gates to Concourse B. Due to construction, food and beverage services will be limited to grab and go kiosks until the new addition opens to the public. The Samuel Adams bar will remain open, but alcohol will be temporarily limited to beer and wine only.

What’s coming next?

When the Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program is complete in fall 2015, Delaware North will open its permanent lineup of restaurants and bars, including Caviar & Bananas, Wendy’s, Charleston Beer Works, DeSano’s Pizza Bakery and Bar, Bar Harvest & Grounds Bakery & Coffee featuring Charleston-based gourmet coffee roaster King Bean Coffee Roasters, and Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Grill.

“We will invest millions over the next three years so that travelers flying into and out of Charleston International will have premier concession options that will include local flavors from favorite regional restaurants,” Kelly said. “When construction is complete, we expect travelers to look forward to making a stop at Charleston International.”

Employees of the outgoing food service vendor were offered opportunities to transition to Delaware North. Kelly said 80 percent to 90 percent of SSP America employees will remain at the airport and work for DNC.
