Missing SC kayaker's body found Sunday afternoon

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (AP/WCIV) - Coast Guard crews recovered the body of a missing South Carolina kayaker after searching more than 5,300 square nautical miles.

Coast Guard officials reported around 2:30 p.m. Sunday that someone had reported a body washing up in the water south of Port Everglades.

Authorities say local kayakers saw David Lemonds of Aiken, South Carolina, left John U. Lloyd Beach State Park on Thursday morning in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak. Park rangers alerted the Coast Guard on Friday morning after seeing that Lemonds' truck had remained undisturbed overnight.

Coast Guard sea and air crews are searching the waters off the Dania Beach park. By Saturday night, the Coast Guard had searched 5,314 square nautical miles.

A search of the park by state wildlife officers failed to turn up any sign of Lemonds.

Lemonds' body was turned over to the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the man's death.
