American Legion holds Memorial Day ceremony in Mt. Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Veterans gathered Sunday at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens to pay tribute to local service members and their families.

Several veterans spoke at the event and used the time to visit old friends and talk about their time in combat.

Among those in attendance were Joshua Hines and Jimmy Kimbrell, both members of the U.S. Navy.

Hines said he's 40 percent disabled now and has been treated for several things that he was exposed to in Vietnam. He was among the many young men who volunteered to go to war, so seeing people take time out from their lives to pay tribute to fallen service members makes him happy.

"It makes me feel great that the people remember," he said. "If it wasn't for the veterans, we wouldn't have this great country."

Kimbrell served in the submarine force for 20 years and is now a member of the American Legion Post 112 and the VFW.

He says the members of Post 112 try to do something special each year to honor some of the many people who died in conflict. He also enjoys seeing old friends and shipmates, Kimbrell said.

"I've lost a many a shipmate. I think about those guys that went down on submarines during World War II and it makes me feel a lot closer to those guys," he said of the special Memorial Day services.

But Kimbrell says he hopes that more of the younger veterans now returning from Iraq and Afghanistan will start joining the VFW and the American Legion now, instead of waiting until they are older.
