GOP candidates for schools chief to debate on ETV

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The eight Republican candidates for South Carolina's state schools superintendent are meeting for a televised debate.

ETV will broadcast the debate Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.

The Republican primary centers on standards to replace Common Core standards, what role education should play in meeting the needs of a changing economy, parental school choice, improving technology in rural areas and school safety.

The candidates include South Carolina Association of School Administrators director Molly Spearman, special needs teacher Sally Atwater, former deputy superintendent Meka Childs, anti-Common Core activist Sheri Few, attorney Amy Cofield, Charleston School Board member Elizabeth Moffly, Anderson County School Board member Gary Burgess and University of South Carolina math professor Don Jordan.

The primary is June 10.
