Legislature approves bill meant to grow breweries

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Legislature has passed a bill designed to grow South Carolina's craft brewery business and make the state a destination for beer aficionados.

The House and Senate unanimously approved Wednesday a compromise that removes brewers' production limits. It also allows them to operate a restaurant onsite and get a permit to sell other producers' beer and wine. The bill heads to Gov. Nikki Haley's desk.

Sen. Luke Rankin says the measure will bring jobs and investment to the state that's now lost to North Carolina.

Currently, South Carolina brewers are limited to producing 2,000 barrels a year. Tourists are limited to what they can buy onsite.

Jaime Tenny, founder of the state Brewers Association, says the bill provides brewers options instead of just regulations.
