CPD: Meth-making materials found in stolen car at mall

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Materials to make meth were found in a stolen car at the Citadel Mall in West Ashley Wednesday night.

According to Charleston police, the owner of the 2006 Nissan Maxima called and told them he was tracking his car via GPS and located it in the parking lot of the mall. Investigators say the car was stolen out of Orangeburg County.

After searching the car, officers report finding a black duffel bag in the trunk that had a "strong gas-like odor" coming from it. They said they found several bottles with an unknown substance inside. The substance was described as yellow with small black flakes in it.

Officers checked the inventory and found that key ingredients were missing, making the car an inactive meth lab.

No one was injured in the incident, police said. Officials from the Hazmat team and Charleston Fire Department cleaned up the car.

Police have not released any information on the suspects involved in the case, but did say the car was found around 7:30 p.m.

People tweeted about the incident, saying they were being kept away from their cars in the lot outside the King Street Grille. Employees at the restaurant said police had been searching the parking lot since 8 p.m.
