More than 151,000 ceramic heaters recalled for fire hazard

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Even though the temperatures have risen to Summer-like conditions, you may want to check on your space heater.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 151,600 Holmes Ceramic Heaters made by Sunbeam.

The oscillating  ceramic heaters can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The recall states that Sunbeam has gotten 132 reports of units that unexpectedly stopped working and/or overheated. One incident resulted in a report of smoke inhalation. There were also 10 reports of burned flooring.

The heaters were sold at Fred Meyer, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide from August 2013 to March 2014 for about $30. They came in black, purple, red, blue and white.

The heaters are described as rectangular, about 12 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep with the model number HCH1823M printed on a label on the bottom. The "Holmes" logo is on the bottom front of the unit and two knobs controlling the fan and the thermostat are on the top.

If you have one of these heaters, you can contact Sunbeam for a full refund.

Consumers can call Sunbeam Products at (800) 834-0056 anytime, or go online to and click on "Ceramic Heater Recall" for more information.
