Panel trims $300M from Beaufort County projects

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A Beaufort County panel has trimmed $300 million in projects from a list of $600 million proposed to be funded by a new 1 percent sales tax.

The Beaufort Gazette reports ( ) that voters could consider the tax in November. The tax is expected to raise about $240 million over eight years.

Agencies across the county initially proposed $600 million in projects to be financed with the money. But the Capital Project Sales Tax Commission on Thursday trimmed that list in half.

Projects that made the cut include a $35 million convention center and 4,000-seat sports arena for the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.

Also still on the list is money to buy the old Port of Port Royal to speed redevelopment of the waterfront in the area.
