Fire damages building in downtown Florence

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - A fire has damaged the roof of a 95-year-old building in downtown Florence. Officials say the structure was going to be demolished anyway.

The Thursday evening fire sent flames and smoke above the city's downtown skyline. Firefighters using two ladder trucks were able to contain the flames to the roof.

The Trust building was built in 1919 and is to be demolished to make way for Francis Marion University's new health sciences building.

Florence Fire Chief Randy Osterman says it appears something sparked debris atop the roof. Workers were on the roof using a cutting torch but that was several hours before the fire started.

There were no injuries reported.
