Mt. Pleasant 'break-a-thon' helps St. Jude's Children's Hospital

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Fists and feet hitting wooden planks sounded a lot like cash registers in Mount Pleasant on Saturday morning.

At the 5th annual Board Break-a-Thon, people could try their hand -- or foot -- at breaking a board for a five-dollar donation. In the end, it meant hundreds of dollars in donations for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Glenn Arnold, owner and chief instructor at Mt. Pleasant Karate, said St. Jude's depends on donations to make it possible to treat every child who comes, regardless of their ability to pay.

Many times, children from the Lowcountry benefit from the research and care at St. Jude's, he said.

At the break-a-thon children of all ages, adult students and even some parents got into the spirit of service in the tradition of the Hwarang Knights/Samurai by facing the pine boards.

The event included a cookout and lessons for newcomers to board breaking.

Mt. Pleasant Karate is still taking donations for St. Jude's at its website. Click here to donate.
