Haley recognizes State Guard, hurricane season

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's State Guard is being recognized as hurricane season begins.

Gov. Nikki Haley has designated this week as "South Carolina State Guard Week." The Guard plays a role when the state is threatened by natural or man-made disasters.

The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season begins Sunday and runs through the end of November.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, a Category 4 storm with 135 mph winds that smashed into Charleston.

State emergency officials estimate that if the same size storm were to hit on the same path today, it would cause upward to $17 billion in damage and destroy 21,000 homes.
