Columbia officer directing traffic fires at man

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 20-year-old man is in the hospital after he was shot at while trying to avoid a Columbia police officer directing traffic.

Police say Tony Craft accelerated suddenly at the officer who was helping traffic at a wreck around 6 a.m. Sunday and the officer fired several shots because he thought his life was in danger.

Investigators say Craft was taken to the hospital with injuries that did not appear life threatening. Police didn't say if Craft was shot or hurt when his car suddenly stopped after the shooting.

Police say they are investigating why Craft didn't stop for the officer, and he and a passenger in the car will likely face charges.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
