CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- More men and women will be able to get breast cancer screenings and perhaps more lives will be saved, thanks to nearly $350,000 in grant money handed out by the Susan G. Komen Lowcountry affiliate.

Six organizations that serve Lowcountry men and women got the $348,000 in grant money.

The organizations receiving money are: Allendale County Hospital, Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, McLeod Health, The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties, Smith Medical Clinic and Volunteers in Medicine Clinic on Hilton Head Island.

The recipients are selected through a competitive peer review system. Since 2001, the Affiliate has invested more than $5.8 million in its 17-county service area.

The Affiliate’s annual Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure® is the organization’s largest fundraiser, supporting community health grants and mission programs.
