CofC advances to Super Regional with 4-2 win over Dirtbags

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCIV) -- The College of Charleston Cougars are the only four seed left in the NCAA tournament, and now they'll be the only four seed to go undefeated into the Super Regional.

Charleston, for a second day in a row, beat Long Beach State to advance in the tournament.

"What a great moment. What a great feeling. This really is great," said head coach Monte Lee. "We played loose and we got the job done."

Freshman Tyler Thornton pitched the entire game. Entering the ninth inning, Thornton had hurled 103 pitches and only given up one extra base hit on the day.

The Cougars got started early, taking a 1-0 lead with a Carol Wise hit that sends Brandon Murray across the plate. But the Dirtbags would come back. Richard Prigatano knocks one off the wall that brings in a run. Then Johnny Bekakis lines a hit off Thornton and puts Long Beach up 2-1.

The Cougars come back in the third inning, though. Wise puts a shot between the shortstop and third base and a throwing error allows another run, tying the game at 2.

After that, the Cougars capitalized on Long Beach's mistakes, pushing the lead to 4-2. On the final out of the game, Thornton forces a pop-up to center.

Thornton was named the Regional MVP for his performance.

This game was supposed to be played Sunday night, but yet another rain delay during the UNC-Long Beach game pushed the conclusion of that game to Monday afternoon with CofC's game to follow.

The last time the Cougars went to a Super Regional was 2006.

The Cougars now move on to play Texas Tech -- in Lubbock -- who beat Miami 4-0 on Monday evening.

As a side note to the coming series, CofC Athletic Director Joe Hull told ABC Sports 4 that the College did make a bid to host the Super Regional. The NCAA has not officially announced the site of the Super Regional.
