Atlantic Beach mayor, residents supporting black biker rally

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Atlantic Beach Mayor Jake Evans says canceling the Atlantic Beach Bikefest would not solve the violence problem in nearby Myrtle Beach.

Local residents and bikers turned out Monday at a town council meeting to express support for the event that Gov. Nikki Haley says should be shut down.

Haley told reporters last week the Bikefest should be ended after a rash of Memorial Day weekend violence on the Grand Strand left three dead and seven injured. Three people were killed at a motel in Myrtle Beach.

Evans says he plans to work with other leaders to come up with a plan for Bikefest.

But he says he would not feel comfortable ending the event that started more than three decades ago and is a tradition in predominantly black Atlantic Beach.
