Man drowns after jumping from Tailrace Canal

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man drowned Friday afternoon after jumping from the Tailrace Canal in Moncks Corner.

According to Coroner Bill Salisbury, 21-year-old Mathew Gourdine, of St. Stephen, jumped off the canal under the Highway 52 bridge shortly after 3 p.m. and did not surface.

Rescue crews were called to the scene and about an hour later, they found Gourdine's body.

His death has been ruled an accident, Salisbury said.
