Running 33 miles for 33 kids a world away

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- As the sun rose over Hampton Park Saturday morning, a group of dedicated runners slipped on their shoes and started a 33-mile run to bring awareness and raise money for a group of children in need.

The goal was to raise $100 for each of the 33 children. The group started with a fundraiser at area Triangle Char & Bar locations last week where the group raised hundreds of dollars in donations through a raffle.

But the big test came Saturday morning with the run -- 33 laps around Hampton Park in downtown Charleston. The runners started at 6 a.m. and anticipate finishing up around 1 p.m.

Whether you're a die-hard long distance runner, or simply looking for a cause to cheer, Project 33 welcomes anyone to join them.

The idea for the run came from local runners Lael McKay and Lisa Lewerke.

Project 33 was founded to help a group of children in a South African home of safety. The children live in a home in the Khayelitsha township of South Africa near Cape Town.
