COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley's former primary challenger says he has more than twice the necessary signatures to be on the ballot in November as a petition candidate.

Tom Ervin delivered four boxes of petitions Monday to the South Carolina State Election Commission. The Greenville attorney needs signatures from 10,000 registered voters. Ervin says he and dozens of volunteers collected 20,137 signatures from across all 46 counties.

He's turning them in more than a month early. The deadline for petition candidate-hopefuls is July 15.

The election commission must certify that the signatures are valid.

Ervin filed in late March to oppose Haley in Tuesday's Republican primary. He withdrew less than two weeks later, saying he's bypassing the primary because he needed more time to introduce himself to voters statewide.
