Shrimp season expands in South Carolina

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The shrimp season is expanding in South Carolina.

The Department of Natural Resources says commercial shrimpers are being allowed to catch shrimp in state waters beginning Tuesday morning.

Shrimpers had been allowed to begin catching shrimp in federal waters more than three miles offshore on May 1.

The waters closer to shore are the heart of the shrimp crop and generally bring better catches.

State officials delayed the start of shrimping in the waters close to the shore because of the cold weather that crippled the spring shrimp crop. The catch last fall had been poor, as well.

Agency officials say the later start for the shrimp season should mean a better fall harvest.
