Former SC House Speaker Rex Carter dies

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Former South Carolina House Speaker Rex Carter of Greenville has died.

A spokesman for Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville said Carter died Monday. He was 88.

Carter served as speaker of the House from 1973 until 1980. He had served in the House from 1953 to 1980.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell of Charleston says South Carolina is better because of Carter's leadership.

He was credited with developing the House's first professional research staff, starting regular orientation sessions for new members and bringing computerized information into the Statehouse.

Former Gov. Dick Riley of Greenville said Carter was a mentor and shared Riley's support for public education and economic development.

Carter is survived by his wife, Floride Gulledge Carter; three children; and five grandchildren

Services are planned Thursday afternoon in Greenville.
