US Sen. Graham seeks to fend off tea party in SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham faces a bevy of tea party candidates as he seeks his party's nomination for a third term in Washington.

Graham is opposed by six challengers in Tuesday's GOP primary, all of whom have criticized him for not being conservative enough. The question is whether Graham can win the nomination outright without the need for a runoff. Polls going into the primary showed Graham's support hovering at around 50 percent.

In an unusual primary, voters are selecting nominees for both U.S. Senate seats.

Fellow Republican Tim Scott, appointed in 2012 after Jim DeMint resigned, is running his first statewide race for the nomination to compete for DeMint's unexpired term. There are also primaries for the Democratic nominations for both seats.
