CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. -- An Anniston man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly impersonated a peace officer at Weaver City Hall in an attempt to arrest the mayor, police said.

Bobby Beck, 59, is charged with making a terrorist threat, impersonating a peace officer and carrying a pistol without a permit. Beck, who was arrested a short time after the incident, is being held in the Calhoun County Jail, where a mental hold has been placed on him to ensure his well-being.

According to Weaver police, Beck entered city hall with a gun on his belt, wearing a badge and proceeded to make demands to see the mayor. After he was informed that the mayor wasn't available, he reportedly said "he had a pair of handcuffs for the mayor" while holding the handcuffs up for city hall workers to see. Before leaving, he said "he would be back later."

The incident was reported to police, and with the help of surveillance video, Beck was identified. A witness provided officers with a partial tag number for the suspect's vehicle.

Police and Calhoun County sheriff's deputies went to Beck's home on Weatherbrook Lane in Anniston, where he reportedly admitted to authorities that while he didn't know who the mayor of Weaver was, he intended to arrest the city leader due to his part-time employment. Beck, who also made claims he was working with the FBI, said it was against the law for the mayor to be a part-time employee for the city.

Police took him into custody before obtaining a warrant to search Beck's residence. During a search of the home, police found a loaded 9mm piston, a security badge and handcuffs, all of which was seized.

A mental health officer was notified of the case to monitor Beck's mental welfare.
