COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn has easily won the Democratic primary in the state's black-majority 6th Congressional District.

Clyburn swamped Dorchester housewife Karen Smith as he starts his bid for re-election. Clyburn was the first black elected to Congress from South Carolina since Reconstruction and is the dean of the state's congressional delegation

Clyburn captured 85 percent of the vote in early returns to 15 percent for Smith who is a tea party supporter who has voted in Republican primaries in recent years.

Clyburn is seeking a 12th term in Washington.

The district runs along the Interstate 95 corridor in the eastern part of the state and reaches into both Columbia and Charleston.
