Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Anthony Culler has won the Republican nomination for Congress in South Carolina's black-majority 6th Congressional District.

The banker from Kingstree had 65 percent of the vote to 35 percent for Leon Winn Tuesday with 56 percent of the precincts reporting. Culler is white and Winn is black. Winn worked as a machinist, owned several beauty salons and is the pastor of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Manning.

Culler now faces incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, who easily won the Democratic primary in the district reaching along Interstate 95 and into Charleston and Columbia.

Clyburn was the first black congressman elected from South Carolina since Reconstruction and is seeking a 12th term in Washington. He easily defeated Karen Smith of Dorchester, collecting nearly 90 percent of the vote.
