Several charges dropped against SC State trustee

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Some charges have been dropped against a South Carolina State University trustee accused in a public corruption and kickback scheme.

Jonathan Pinson is to go on trial next week on dozens of charges. On Wednesday, federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss two counts of wire fraud, one count of money laundering and one count of lying to investigators.

The government also said it's seeking a sentence of about 22 years in prison for Pinson.

The former trustee is accused of racketeering and fraud, as well as trying to get the university to buy land from a Florida developer in exchange for a Porsche SUV for himself as a thank you gift.

Six people have pleaded guilty and are expected to testify in next week's trial.
