Authorities remove 13 dogs, 4 cats from Birmingham animal shelter operating without business license

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Authorities removed 13 dogs and four cats from a Birmingham-area shelter that was operating without a business license, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

According to a release, sheriff's investigators and Birmingham police executed a search warrant around 10 a.m. at Head to Tail Animal Care located at 4915 5th Avenue South. During the search, authorities found the animals weren't being properly cared for and were boarded in "unacceptable" conditions.

The raid comes after the sheriff's office received information in May regarding possible incidents of animal cruelty at the business. It was also reported that the owner was illegally operating as an animal adoption/shelter. The owner, Scott Kirkland, faces charges of operating a business without a license. He wasn't present at the time of the raid.

One of the dogs recovered was returned to its owner. The other animals are being examined by veterinarians, who will help investigators and the district attorney's office determine if animal cruelty charges will be filed.

Anyone who may have had their pet boarded at the business is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 205-325-5711.

An investigation remains ongoing.
