Florida Georgia Line and Nelly first acts to perform at the Joe in 6 years

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Country band Florida-Georgia Line and hip hop artist Nelly played to a sold-out crowd at Joseph Riley Park Thursday night.

Cars, traffic and full parking lots could have gotten in the way, but officials said they were prepared.

“We have a great traffic plan with the city police department,” Riverdogs general manager Dave Echols said.

Charleston County EMS also parked outside the stadium, on standby because of crowds and the heat.

The acts were the first to perform at the Joe since Dave Matthews in 2008. Officials said they wished they could bring more acts, but because the stadium is outside and can only hold 12,000 people, it isn't always viable.

“The Joe is a beautiful facility. We really did showcase it to not just baseball fans, but everybody. A lot of tourism for the show,” Echols said.

Florida Georgia Line is on tour, "Cruising” through several minor league ballparks this summer. Lowcountry fans said the tunes were worth the lines.

"We don’t get too much excitement around here, you know? So when it does come you got to come," said Jennifer Smoak, who drove into Charleston from Walterboro.

"Not a lot of big country stars come to Charleston. So it’s exciting to have them here," Erin Whitworth said.

As the band would say, "let the good times roll."
